2026 nfl draft review. Innovative, accurate!

EXPLANATION OF GRADING

2026 DRAFT REVIEW:

MY VIEWS ON DRAFT EVALUATION:

I decided to stay with simple letter grades for rating team picks and overall draft. Everybody understands them, they will range from A+ to F. The ratings are round sensitive; I will use a multiplier each round and for number of picks.  The Draft is one of my primary reasons for this site, for decades I've watched teams make consistent mistakes and all out failures. Every year I still hear some classic cliches and archaic sayings like "you can't teach speed" the ever popular "best player available" and the more recent additions "He had a great Pro Day" or "He blew up the Combine" Following these thought processes consistently blows up in the face of drafting team. If teams would simply draft the best player to fill needs on their team in the proper round draft failures would be minimized. To me the only things that cannot be taught are Height and Heart!! And if you ignore several years of film and game production for a player who tests well in shorts and a t-shirt you deserve what you get! So yes my innovative views on NFL draft coverage differ wildly but watch, yes I miss one now and then but I'll take the pepsi challenge with anybody out there that mine are more accurate. Starting next year I will be doing my version of a nfl mock draft also. Yes it will be different.

NEW GRADING SCALE FOR PLAYERS AND TEAMS FOR 2026.

I've decided to tweak my scoring system a bit for this season. After a couple years with the old system, I came to realize my system was too soft and it needed tightened up so I have done that. I'm confident after running some simulations this will be more accurate.

Change is good and needed for an ever-changing event.

If you're not growing and evolving, YOU ARE DYING!!! OR MEL KIPER!!

PLAYER GRADING:

Factors in grading are. the players draft rating, fit for scheme and need. Some players may receive a higher grade than those with higher Draft Rating due to better scheme fit or filling a primary or secondary need. Points will be lost for drafting players with lower draft ratings than position drafted or questions on scheme fit or need. These decisions are based solely my own judgement and evaluations. I often differ significantly from so called "Experts" and Draft rooms around the NFL; I also will point out organizations for their failures and continued failures. I do not care who doesn't like it, unlike others I will call it just as I see it with 0.0 worry who I offend!!

TEAM DRAFT GRADING:

My team grading is based on simple math using the initial letter grade and points for a start. I will then add multiplier #1, this is the round sensitive grade, higher rounds receive a higher multiplier and lower receive a lower multiplier, simple enough I believe.  The reasoning for this is higher round picks carry more importance due to talent available and of course Salary Cap implications which can cripple a Franchise. Teams that consistently overdraft limit future movements in Free Agency, also this can limit the Franchise when it comes to the all important 2nd contract for core players. This is often overlooked but a vital component in a successful franchise. Overdrafting in my opinion is the single most overlooked and easily dismissed componant in failing franchises.  In '21  I  added  multiplier#2  this comes from the number of picks a team makes. this multiplier will work both ways. There are 7 rounds so that is the base number, over 7 picks the team will a positive multiplier and under 7 picks a negative multiplier. This will achieve better accuracy as to which team has the true Best Draft.  I've looked at numerous other draft grades from so called "experts" and they are a joke, mostly A's an B's when in reality if you look at history you will find far more average or below average grades after 3 years. My Drafts and grades will be saved in my History section for review after 3 and 5 years, you will not find that information on other sites. NEW  IMPROVED GRADING FOR '22. New for this season, I felt I was in need of some adjustments so I tightened things up just a touch from last season. So after much thought and experimentation. NEW FOR "23. A small change as I went to 3 digits past the decimal for all scores, just more accurate.

TEAM GRADING SCALE

A+ Over 7.00          C+ 4.26 to 4.50

A    6.51 to 7.00      C    4.01 to 4.25

A- 6.01 to 6.50       C- 3.76 to 4.00

B+ 5.51 to 6.00       D+ 3.51 to 3.75

B   5.01 to 5.50        D   3.26 to 3.50

B- 4.51 to 5.00        D-  3.01 to 3.25

                   F  0.0 to 3.00

Base- Is the average of Player grades. Grades are set by using the following criteria. My rating of the player. How soon the player will be able to contribute. Team need at the position. Fit with the teams coaching and scheme. Players on the board when the pick was made.

Multiplier #1-Take the picks and add in Multiplier for the round, 1st round highest and so on. The top 3 rounds are by far the most important, so they carry the most weight and impact the final score the most. My ratings also reward teams for quality picks in the later rounds but at a much lower rate.

Multiplier #2  This multiplier is much smaller but still very important in determining the top drafts.Take the number of picks overall and add Multiplier #2. 7 round draft so 7 is nuetral, over 7 adds to score under 7 lowers score each pick over or under changes the multiplier. Of course a draft can be made by one pick but teams that year in and year out compete for the title need multiple players from each draft to become starters.

Grade=  Final Grade, Simple enough!

         FINAL 2026 DRAFT TEAM RANKINGS

Well, there were some MAJOR surprises at the top of these draft rankings as the top 3 are teams that have been notoriously bad in recent years and frankly most of the time in recent memory were at the top!  Cleveland at the top was quite the surprise, perhaps someone finally got the owner to stay out of it, same in Tennessee and the NY Jets and Miami! Several other in my Top 10 are regular residents there, NY Giants, Baltimore, Pittsburgh. Bad year for BOTH LA teams as they failed miserably

TEAM RANKING THOUGHTS:

Well, there we have it.  I'm liking the adjustments I made in ranking players and teams. As I said after last year, adjustment to my grading were in order, and my team grades are more accurate. I have said before, none of the "draft experts" give any team below a C- and we ALL KNOW that is never the case!  Well at least I didn't have ALL A's and B's as to not offend anyone. If you go back and look at the majority of the drafts, you will find numerous failures, to be kind! Honestly, close to half the teams FAIL in the draft in most seasons.  I'm about being honest and providing accurate information. That's a wrap for now and I'll OWN IT unlike any others; sure, I'll make mistakes, but I learn from mine and continue to improve!

                                                               DRAFT GRADING COMPARISONS

This season I'll begin to compare my grades directly with others in the business so you can all see who is more accurate. I'M CONFIDENT that I will be  at the top, most seasons. Unfortunately, I cannot put Kiper's most recent FAILURE up due to ESPN hiding it on their pay to see list.  I will list by my Rankings 1-32 for easy reference. I will compare grades with these sites

  EXPLANATION OF OTHER TERMS

My way of rating players already in the NFL.

TOP 10:  Top 10 at position simply means what it says, players consistently in the Top 10 at their position.  Rock solid and entrenched at position, top paid, STARS!!

MIDDLE 10: These are players consistently ranked from 11-20 at their position, occasionally the find lightning in a bottle and have a Top 10 season. Player in a solid position in the league but teams will look at opportunities to improve the position.

BOTTOM 10: Simple again, bottom 3rd of player at the position, bottom of the roster, fringe NFL players. These players teams are always looking to upgrade and replace.

2nd7th      ROUND ONE

In round one teams need to draft STARS, long-time starters, plug and play for multiple years. Steer clear of red flags, over drafting, drafting on Combine or ridiculous Pro Day performances and developmental players, DO NOT BELONG IN THIS ROUND!!!  If your 1st round pick does not start or play significant minutes YOU FAILED on numerous levels!!  Not only did you waste a pick that needed to be correct, but you also caused salary Cap implications that can cause long-term and cripple a Franchise for years to come.

1.Las Vegas     Fernando Mendoza     QB         Ind            B

My #1 QB in the draft, good player, great person, fills a massive need, just not worthy of #1 pick overall to me. There are too many questions in how good he can be. I see him as a solid but middle 10 QB long-term, just not enough for #1 OVERALL, desperate need outweighed what probably would have been best for long-term team success.

2.NY Jets          David Bailey                    DE       TxTch         A+

My #1 43 DE. Great player and kid, fills massive need, Top 5 player. great pick

3.Arizona         Jerimiah Love                 RB       NDme       A+

My #1 RB, Great player and kid, fills major need for playmaker, great pick

4.Tennessee    Carnell Tate                     WR        OSU         A+

My #1 WR in the draft. Massive need, great pick

5.NY Giants      Arvell Reese                  OLB        OSU        A+

My #1 OLB. Great player and athlete freak, versatile should fit scheme very well. Outstanding pick.

6.Kansas City   Mansoor Delane           CB         LSU        B-

My #3 CB. That said. TOTAL HEAD SCRATCHER here, give up two picks to move up three? WTF? Then pick a good player that fills a need who would have been there at 9?  Makes no sense.

7.Washington   Sonny Syles                   OLB      OSU        A+

My #2 OLB. Great player, TREMENDOUS athlete, still only two years at LB so I wonder how soon the returns will come. Still an excellent pick. The best athlete in the draft.

8.New Orleans Jordyn Tyson                 WR      AzSt        A+

My #2 WR. Excellent player and pick. Fills major need

9.Cleveland        Spencer Fano                 LT       Utah        A

My #1 LT, fills a MASSIVE need, my only reservation is this a touch early, they could have traded back again, probably?

10.NY Giants      Francis Mauigoa           RT     Mia(F)      A

My #1 RT. Perfect fit for what is likely Harbaughs offense, Great pick.

11.Dallas             Caleb Downs                   FS      OSU         A+

My #1 FS. I was ready to rip them for the trade then they took my #1 OVERALL player who fills a MAJOR need on the field and in terms of leadership. GREAT PICK JERRY! There I said something nice about him.

12.Miami             Kaydyn Proctor             RT      Ala           D

My #5 RT. Late 2nd round grade. I don't know what they saw, crazy athlete for his size but consistently inconsistent at Bama, who as you remember had NO running game last season. A 2nd round talent, A VERY large reach here, no pun intended!

13.LA Rams        Ty Simpson                     QB      Ala           F

OK, My #2 QB but an early 3rd round grade. I just have no clue, NO REASON to take him here, a future QB is a need but not close to their top one, also, he would have been there in 2nd round. Just a terrible pick on multiple levels.

14.Baltimore      Vega Ioane                      G     PennSt      A+

My #1 Guard! Typical Raven pick, you know, A GOOD ONE!!!

15.Tamp Bay       Rueben Bain                 DE     Mia(F)      A+

My #2 43 DE, Top 10 Talent, the HELL with the measurements, the kids a PLAYER!!!

16.NY Jets           Kenyon Sadiq              TE      Ore            A+

My #1 TE. Great Pick Top 10 talent, they need to get more athletic, he can and will play outside.

17.Detroit            Blake Miller                  RT     Clem         A

My #2 RT Rock solid pick, my only reservation is they could have bumped back a bit, and he would have been there.

18.Minnesota     Caleb Banks                 NT      Fla            F

My #3 NT Early 3rd round grade. Massive reach surely would have been there in 2nd round, maybe third. TREMENDOUS athlete for his size but has not lived up to his ability and has had a significant foot injury which is not a good thing on big guys. Remember the raw talent is RARE, if he stays heathy, I may well have to amend this assessment!

19.Carolina         Monroe Freeling        LT       Ga             B

My #3 LT Very nice player with more upside than any OT in draft but will he live up to his potential? Time will tell. I just see better options available.

20.Philadelphia   Makai Lemon             SWR    USC         A+

My #1 SWR, Top 10 Talent. Great fit and player.  Philly should love this kid's game.

21.Pittsburgh    Mav Iheanachor          RT     AzSt         B+

My #4 RT. Nice player, fills need, fits scheme nicely and should be a good player, I just feel it's early for him and better options available

22.LA Chargers Akheem Mesidor         DE    Mia(F)      D-

My #7 43 DE Early 3rd round grade. I'm just not as high on him as others, to one dimensional for me, rotational player with some rush ability to me.

23.Dallas             Malichi Lawrence        DE     UCF          F

My #11 43 DE Mid 4th round grade!! Well Jerry your reprieve has been revoked. Terrible pick at this point, major need, nice player with some upside but he would have been on the board at PICK 50, AT LEAST!!! Numerous better options available at this point. Picks like this is why the Cowboys have done nothing for decades!!

24.Cleveland     KC Concepcion            SWR  TxAM        B+

My #3 SWR. MONSTER need!  Just early for a very good player who has shown some inconsistency in catching and ran a limited route tree in CFB. I think he will overcome it, great kid, should be the best Browns WR pick in quite some time but still not a pure #1 WR IMO that they DESPARTELY need.

25.Chicago          Dillion Thieneman      FS       Ore         A+

My #2 FS Great player. I'm not sure why some were bashing him, but this is a great pick.

26.Houston         Keylan Rutledge           G       GaTch      D-

My #5 G, Late 2nd round grade.  Nice player should have a solid career but just WILDLY too early and they moved up to get him. Over drafting players is the formula for a failed draft!!

27.Miami               Chris Johnson             CB      SDSt         A

My #3 CB Early 2nd round grade. Nice player and pick, fills need. Might have been available later.

28.New England   Caleb Lomu               LT       Utah         A+

My #2 LT. Outstanding pick, fits scheme and need!

29.Kansas City      Peter Woods             DT      Clem        A

My #1 DT. Solid pick fills major need, just a bit early.

30.NY Jets             Omar Cooper            SWR    Ind           F

My #8 SWR Early 4th round grade. Some people love him, I see a WR4/5 without a true position, I see him in slot only, opinions differ. Time will tell who is correct.

31.Tennessee       Keldric Faulk              DE       Aub         A+

My #1 34 DE. Very good pick, DL was a major need, and he fits in numerous schemes, now they just need to get that light on 100% of the time.

32.Seattle             Jadarian Price           RB      NDme      A+

My #3 RB, 1st round grade. Great pick, fills need and he should be quite good fit in that offense,

1st TIME EVER a team has had two picks in a round and made both best and worst pick lists in the SAME round!!! Nice job Jerry!  You cause the mediocrity you live in! SMH!!

 ROUND TWO

Very close to round one but not as vital, still looking for STARS and STARTERS but players with limited developmental needs can be of value here. Again, watch for over drafting and idiot GM's drafting on measurables and testing performances, these players while perhaps somewhat useful cause a ripple effect within the salary structure that can destroy a team. Still if players in this round do not contribute in some manner in year one, starter, regular  contributing reserve, core Special Teams, YOU FAILED!!

 ROUND THREE

Still looking for starters or key reserves at this point, better teams are looking for situational fits and high-level developmental players.
